The Hampshire area of Hackwood Park, close to Basingstoke, benefits today from an excellent point to point course. However, back in the latter part of the 18th century it held its own races under rules.  That meeting took place on Monday 25th June 1787 and consisted of one Match in which each horse carried 11st 2lbs over a 2 mile course. In the event Lord Barnard’s unnamed gelding prevailed when ridden by the Lord himself.
